What orthodontic options are available at Gunning Dental?

We offer a range of orthodontic treatments to suit different needs and preferences, including clear aligners (such as Invisalign and Clear Correct) and traditional fixed braces, metal and ceramic/clear. These options are available for both adults and children.

What are clear aligners, and how do they work?

Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, removable plastic trays that gradually straighten your teeth. They are virtually invisible and can be taken out for eating, brushing, and flossing. Patients receive a new set of aligners approximately every two – four weeks, each slightly adjusted to move teeth into the desired position.

What are fixed braces, and how do they work?

Fixed braces consist of metal or ceramic brackets attached to the teeth and connected by wires. Our dentist Jayne periodically adjusts the wires to move the teeth into the correct position. They are effective for treating a wide range of orthodontic issues. We offer ceramic brackets with clear wires that are very discrete.

Which option is better, clear aligners or fixed braces?

The best option depends on individual needs and preferences. Clear aligners are popular for their aesthetic appeal and convenience, while fixed braces are often more suitable for complex cases. Our dentist Jayne will assess your situation and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Can children use clear aligners?

Yes, clear aligners can be suitable for children, particularly those who have all their permanent teeth. However, compliance is essential as they must be worn for 20-22 hours a day. Fixed braces might be recommended for younger children or those who might not adhere to wearing aligners consistently. Clear aligners aren’t offered on the NHS.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment duration varies depending on the complexity of the case and the type of appliance used. On average, clear aligner treatment takes about 6-18 months, while fixed braces typically take 18-24 months. Your dentist will provide a more accurate timeline during your consultation.

Are orthodontic treatments painful?

You may experience some discomfort or pressure when braces are first fitted or when aligners are changed. This is a sign that the treatment is working to move your teeth. The discomfort is usually mild and temporary.

How often will I need to visit my dentist during treatment?

Regular check-ups are essential to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments. For fixed braces, visits are typically every 4-6 weeks. For clear aligners, appointments may be less frequent, around every 6-8 weeks.

What are the costs associated with orthodontic treatments?

Costs vary depending on the type of treatment and its duration. Clear aligners may cost more than traditional braces. We spread the cost of your treatment across the schedule of appointments to make treatment more affordable. A detailed cost estimate will be provided during your initial consultation. We also offer Finance. Our Treatment Coordinators will be able to run you through all of the options and various payment plans available.

Do you offer consultations to determine the best treatment option?

Yes, we offer comprehensive consultations where our dentist Jayne will examine your teeth, discuss your goals, and recommend the most suitable treatment options. This is the first step toward achieving your ideal smile.

Can adults benefit from orthodontic treatments?

Absolutely! Orthodontic treatment can be effective at any age. Many adults have chosen to have clear aligners or clear fixed braces with us for their discreet appearance.

How do I care for my teeth during orthodontic treatment?

Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial. Brush and floss regularly, and follow the specific care instructions provided by your dentist. If you have fixed braces, avoid sticky or hard foods that can damage the brackets and wires.

How long will my teeth stay straight after I finish my treatment?

With consistent use of your retainers overnight, after your treatment is complete, your results can be maintained indefinitely.
